This Handbook focuses on helping skilled attendant (SA) to improve and further develop their counselling and communication skills for maternal and newborn health.

The Handbook is designed primarily to be used by groups with a facilitator, but it is also flexible, and people with various skills and needs, groups or individuals without a facilitator can work through the Handbook. Self-directed learning allows individual users or groups of users to work through the material at their own pace, putting the skills and knowledge into practice in the work environment. All users are encouraged to critically reflect on their past and current practice to help them develop and improve their counselling skills.

This Handbook is a companion to the ‘Pregnancy, Childbirth, Postpartum and Newborn Care: A guide for essential practice’ but it is not essential to have the PCPNC as the key information is included within the different sessions.
